— arthur henry levinson, age 30, born in december in an upper middle class suburb of philadelphia. uses false documents with the surname cohen or friedman and various permutations of generic english middle names, but he keeps his first name to keep his identity from being entirely washed away in his line of work.
— from a secular jewish family of ashkenazi descent. maternal and paternal ancestors came to england from russia and ukraine respectively in the 1880s, and his grandparents emigrated to the US from england following the second world war in search of greater economic mobility.
— his dad was a civil engineer (now retired) and his mother is a social worker. she became a SAHM until he and his sister rachel, four years his junior, left for college, then returned to the workforce. the levinsons moved to brooklyn the summer before arthur's freshman year of high school, and his sister, a painter, still lives in nyc.
— his parents loved him, but sometimes struggled to express it. he had a comfortable enough childhood and knows that he was loved, and has a good relationship with most of his family even if he hasn't seen them much, but arthur struggles at times to let his guard down and allow other people to bond with him. impermanent relationships are easier for him, and he struggles with the vulnerability required to express his emotional needs, especially in relationships.
— gay and out. he doesn't have any significant internalized homophobia to speak of, but he was closeted in the military.
— past military service in the dreamshare program. he originally joined the army corps of engineers to follow in his father's footsteps, and got a degree through it - the army seemed like a solid career decision and would pay to put him through college - but was rerouted shortly after his graduation when the dreamshare program pulled from the pool of accepted members with similar rationale to recruiting ariadne from an architectural program with an aptitude test he scored quite high on.
— arthur does jobs now for the love of the game. he's fascinated by other people and likes getting in their heads - and on some level he needs a degree of thrill and danger in his life to avoid getting too restless. he seeks deep, stable emotional relationships with a small number of people and physical transience.
